GREENWOOD — Betty Dean Suber, 81, former resident, 114 Union St., departed this life Dec. 1, 2013 at Hospice House in Greenwood.

She was born, Dec. 1, 1932 as the third daughter of Raymond “Preach” Watts Dean and Ila Belle Henderson Dean. She was raised in the Laurens County section of Whitmire, as she fondly referred to as “God’s Country.” After graduating from Lander College, she was married to her high school sweetheart, Jon Robert Suber Jr. in 1954. She provided a loving and happy home at 114 Union St. where she made all feel welcomed and which also was a common stopping point for friends or family on Saturday at lunch to enjoy a chargrilled hamburger cooked on the back porch.

During her life in Whitmire, she taught high school for several years and after starting her family moved to teaching kindergarten privately. She went on to become the first public kindergarten teacher in Whitmire. Many children’s lives were touched by her teaching during these many years. She was also known for her joy filled smile as she taught, helped comfort, or care for those around her.

Mrs. Suber was an active member of Whitmire United Methodist Church, Whitmire Biographical Club, Friends of Newberry County Library, Whitmire Beautification Committee, and others. During her last years of life she moved to Greenwood to be near her girls.

She is survived by her daughters, Jean Suber Griffin and son-in-law Buck, Sarah Suber Deal and son-in-law Ed; her grandchildren, Ellyn “Elly” Elizabeth Deal and Robert Lee Deal; her beloved special friend for many years, Horace Jenkins; best friend Lucy Dillard; her sisters, Joye Dean Ferrill and Frances “Yank” Dean Nivens; and was predeceased by Louise Dean Ellis. She is also survived by her sisters-in law, Mildred Suber Tyler, Magda Suber, and Muriel Suber; also brothers-in-law, Ed Ellis, Gay Suber, Charlie Tyler, and Joe Ferrill; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Special appreciation is given to her loving caregivers, Shannon Adams, Betty McCollough, and Deryl McGuire as well as the staff members with Hospice of the Piedmont. She also has been comforted and loved by her faithful dog, Happy.

A memorial service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Whitmire United Methodist Church with Rev. Amie Shaver and Rev. Valerie Mireb officiating. Burial will follow in Whitmire Cemetery.

A reception for family and friends will be Monday from noon until the service hour in the church fellowship hall and the family will also receive friends Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Blyth Funeral Home.
