UNION — Mr. George Kelly Blanton, 93, husband of Betty Clippard Blanton, 1113 Old Ferry Road, Union, SC, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014 at Park Place Assisted Living.
Mr. Blanton was born in Cliffside, NC a son of the late William Franklin Blanton and Margaret Sudie Moore Blanton. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and, before his retirement, was employed with Microfibers in Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Blanton came to Union in 1956 to help open Cone Mills Carlisle Finishing Plant where he served as Technical Superintendent. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps having served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church. Mr. Blanton was an avid fisherman and an animal lover.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Brenda Blanton League of Greenville, Kathy Keasler and husband Tony of the home; a son, Kirk Smith of Gadsden, Alabama; his namesake grandson, Kelly Blanton League of Greenville and four other grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Ginny Wirtanen of Madison, Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Sudalter; and a sister, Margie Miller.
Memorial services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 7-8 p.m. prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
