State patrol evidence indicates the driver of a pickup truck that struck and killed a teen on Wares Cross Road after dark Monday didn’t see the victim crossing the road.

LaGrange High School student Brandon James Truitt, 15, of Roanoke Road was struck by a westbound 2000 Dodge Ram driven by James Gore, 40, of LaGrange. Truitt was crossing Wares Cross Road near the 400 to 500 block about 6:40 p.m. Monday with his bicycle when he was struck by the pickup, witnesses told Georgia State Patrol.

Truitt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gore told troopers he didn’t see Truitt, who was more than four feet into the lane when struck, said state trooper Brad Turner. The road recently has been repaved with asphalt and had not received new reflective striping. Turner said skid marks indicate Gore stopped quickly.

No charges are pending against Gore, who volunteered a blood sample for toxicology screening at the GBI crime lab, Turner said. There was no evidence that Gore was impaired, he added.
