UNION COUNTY — An intense season opener ended in a 29-28 Union County victory during the final seconds of Friday night’s game.
The Yellow Jackets led Gaffney 20-7 until Gaffney scored three touchdowns in the 4th quarter, taking a 28-20 lead. Union County answered with QB De’Arrius Smith throwing a 52-yard touchdown pass to Shi Smith on the next drive, making the score 28-26, but Union County was unsuccessful on the two-point conversion attempt. In the final minute of the game, De’Arrius Smith completed four passes to take the Jackets down field. During the final seconds of the game, Union County kicker Blake Berry kicked a field goal, securing the Yellow Jackets’ win as a deafening roar was heard among the thousands of Union County fans in attendance.
“It was a great win for our kids,” said Coach Steve Taneyhill. “They fought until the very end. Our motto is ‘finish’ and they did.”
The defensive MVP of the game was DB Vensha Beatty, who had 19 tackles. The offensive MVP was QB De’Arrius Smith who completed 29 of 52 passes for 437 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Christian Petty had two rushing touchdowns, and Coach Taneyhill also praised wide receiver Shemar Glenn who made 12 catches for 158 yards.
Taneyhill said while Friday’s game was a great win, it was only one game of many.
“We have to move on and get ready for Newberry,” he said.
