UNION — Trans-South Wrestling’s upcoming event will feature a match to crown new tag-team champions.

TSW will hold its next event this Saturday, June 7, at the Union County Fairgrounds, including two championship matches.

The vacant TSW Tag-Team Championship will be decided with the final match of an ongoing four-month tournament. The title was vacated due to an extended absence by Danny Dollar, who won the title — along with his partner Brandon Phoenix — in the first-ever TSW tag-team tournament, which was held in memory of Dr. Bobby Rippy. This weekend, the new champions will be decided in a match between former heavyweight champion and Union native Deon Johnson and his tag-team partner “Dirty” (Ernest Robinson) of Greenville versus Scotty Mathews of Fayetteville, N.C. and Eric Adamz of Charlotte.

Referee Tracy Rash said he hopes this Saturday’s TSW Tag-Team Championship will spark new life into tag-team competition in the area.

“In the days of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, this area was known for tag-team wrestling, with teams like George Becker and Johnny Weaver, Rip Hawk and Swede Hansen, and then later on, the Andersons, the Rock and Roll Express, and the Midnight Express,” Rash said, pointing out that even Ric Flair first came to the Carolinas as part of a tag team with Rip Hawk in the 1970s.

In singles title competition, former WCW star The Stro “Maestro of Wrestling” will defend the TSW Heavyweight Championship against a surprise opponent. Last month, Stro retained his title after a defense against newcomer Garrett Sinclair of Pageland. Stro chose Sinclair as his opponent for his first title defense. The challenger to the title this Saturday was decided by a TSW board of directors vote and will be announced at the event. Board member Ray Barber said he believes fans will see a more evenly matched contest at this weekend’s event.

Others on the card will include third-generation star Tessa Blanchard, Kameron Kade, Chase “Cauliflower” Brown, Alex Avgerinos, Jaxson James and more.
