UNION COUNTY — After taking their first loss of the season to Lockhart on Monday, the Sims Tigers baseball team defeated Spartanburg in a double header on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Lockhart Middle School baseball team handed the Sims Tigers their first loss of the season with a final score of 10-2. The Red Devils found redemption after they had suffered a loss to the Tigers earlier in the season.

In Monday’s game, Lockhart put up an early lead in the top of the first inning, with the score being 7-0 going into the second. Sims scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. The game was called in the sixth inning due to time, leaving the final score 10-2 favoring Lockhart.

“We beat Lockhart in our first match-up of the season,” said Sims Coach Tee Farr. “I don’t think they liked that very much and it showed throughout every player on their team.”

Coming off a loss, Sims then won both games in a double header against Spartanburg on Tuesday.

Game 1 went five innings, with Sims coming out on top 8-4. Zack Humphries was the winning pitcher, recording two strikeouts. Dee Davis, Chase Davis, Andrew Floyd, Princeton Hunter and Rett Wages each recorded hits. Samuel Brannon was two-for-three with two RBIs. Tykevaes Kershaw stole a pair of bases, and Quadrik Smith stole a base.

Game 2 had an exciting ending, with Sims winning 4-3. With one out and the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the final inning, Tykevaes Kershaw hit a stand-up double. Then, on a steal to third, Kershaw forced the third baseman to drop the ball, and Kershaw sprinted home for the winning run.

Pitcher Rett Wages led Sims to a Game 2 win, recording a pair of strikeouts. Tykevaes Kershaw, Chase Davis, Andrew Floyd and Princeton Hunter each recorded hits.

“There were multiple standout players and plays that are noteworthy during these two games, but Sims won as a team tonight on all counts,” Farr said Tuesday. “The team truly came together and there isn’t much more that a coach can ask for than that. I am proud of the team that played tonight win or lose.”
