UNION COUNTY — The Union County High School boys tennis team finished the week with a win after suffering two heartbreaking losses.

On Monday, the team took its first loss of the season to Rock Hill 4-3. A disappointed Coach Tom Adamo mentioned a lack of motivation displayed by some of his players.

“We matched up well with them and had our opportunities to pull out a win, but there is no drive to really want to win from some of the older kids who used to have a passion for the game,” Adamo said Tuesday morning. “When they come off the court, you cannot tell if they won or lost. These issues will be addressed during our next practice.”

Monday’s match came down to the No. 1 doubles team of Matt Haney and Tyler Gregory. Adamo said both Haney and Gregory played well together, losing in the third-set tie-breaker.

“The deciding match is like in basketball; you want the ball in your hands for the last shot if you want to win,” Adamo said. “I can remember the old saying which is true to this day, ‘There is no I in team, but there is in win.’”

Then on Tuesday, Union County lost its next match to Clinton 4-3.

“The only pre-game talk I gave them was, ‘You can remain a part of history, or you can make it — it is up to you,’” Adamo said.

Union County was up 3-1 until two matches playing each went into third-set tie-breakers, with Union County dropping both.

“Thanks to the ones who played their hearts out trying to do something no other UCHS team has ever done,” Adamo said. “The good thing is that we know we can win and have another shot to achieve this goal without any personal breakdowns.”

In JV play on Tuesday, doubles team Ty Kingsmore and Tyler Barber defeated a Clinton team 8-1.

On Wednesday, the team moved back into the win column after the two losses earlier in the week, defeating York in a final score of 5-2.

Adamo said York brought a stronger line-up this time than in the two teams’ first match up. Adamo said his players stepped up and played very well.
