UNION — The USC Union Bantams club baseball team came away with two wins and two losses after two doubleheaders against Gray Military Academy over the weekend.
Bantams Coach Paul Wilkes called Gray Military an all-around good baseball team that hit the ball well, played good defense, and had a good pitching staff.
“We hit the ball well all weekend, but we need to work on our situational hitting because we left some runners on base in some key situations,” Wilkes said.
Wilkes named Jake Walton the MVP for the entire weekend. Walton went four for 10 with a home run.
Wilkes also mentioned he was surprised to see the five-foot-six, 155-pound Rashad Green hit a home run out.
“He was batting lead-off for his speed, but it’s also nice to have a lead-off hitter who can put the ball out of the park,” Wilkes said.
Wilkes added that Brandon Pitts was three for eight with a double and two singles.
“I was really impressed by the way Keiston Bishop, Troy Baucom and Alec Acevedo pitched,” Wilkes said.
Wilkes pointed out that Acevedos pitched Game 4 in its entirety, and Bishop pitched his way out of two bases-loaded, no-out situations without allowing any runs to be scored.
“As long as we continue to throw strikes and play sound defense, our bats will come around, and we can live up to preseason expectations,” Wilkes said.
