DUE WEST — Kristin Giles — a 2013 Union County High School graduate — led the Erskine College Flying Fleet women’s basketball team to a 88-81 road win over in-state rival Southern Wesleyan University on Thursday.
Giles led her team in scoring during Thursday’s game, delivering a career-high 33 points. This was the team’s third win in a row, improving its season record to 5-4.
Giles currently averages 14.6 points per game at Erskine. She is shooting 40 percent from the three-point line and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Head Coach Russ Gregg said he admires Giles’ confidence.
“Kristin came in ready to go, and she is a big time scoring threat for us right now,” Gregg said. “She has really stepped up in the last several games.”
Gregg said Giles — one of four freshman starters on the team — was instrumental in the Flying Fleet taking the lead against SWU on Thursday, and when the SWU Warriors regained a 49-48 lead in the second half, Giles continued to score, putting the Flying Fleet back in the lead. Gregg said the entire team is ready for today’s big game against North Greenville, which will be the first league game since their Christmas break.
Giles was first spotted by Erskine’s recruiting coach Tasha James last March during Greenville’s FCA All-Star Basketball Challenge. As a Yellow Jacket, Giles led UCHS to a Region III-AAA championship and averaged 16.7 points per game with 3.1 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 4.4 assists during the 2012-2013 season.
