UNION — Six local youths are headed to the next round of the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition.

Since 1995, the Union County Recreation Department has sponsored the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition at Union County Stadium for local boys and girls ages 6-15.

Winners are chosen based on the longest punt, pass and kick distances, which are measured according to NFL PPK guidelines. The competition included six age categories — 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15.

Saturday’s winners were Christian Hughey, April Benvenuti, Luke Sumner, Brody Fowler, Collin Fowler, and Calen Benvenuti.

Sam Phipps of the Union County Recreation Department, said although there was a lower turnout for this year’s competition than that of years past, each of the children who competed seemed to have a great time.

The six first-place winners from Saturday’s local competition will go on to compete at a sectional competition to be held in Pickens. If they qualify during sectionals, they will go to a team championship competition, which will be held at a Carolina Panthers game in November. Those who qualify at that competition will go on to a national competition.
