UNION — The Union County Yellow Jackets were unable to defeat arch rival Gaffney Indians, who had the home-field advantage during the non-region game at “The Reservation” Friday evening.
Gaffney was the first to score in the first quarter, taking a 7-0 lead over Union County. The score remained through the first half, and the second half opened with first down carries by Union County running back Ty Thomas. However, Gaffney’s Jordan Shippy returned an interception for the touchdown, increasing Gaffney’s lead to 14-0.
Then, with 7:21 left in the third quarter, Union began to mount a comeback with first downs from Christian Petty and Ty Thomas. A 25-yard run into the end zone by Petty put Union County on the scoreboard, and a PAT by Blake Berry made the score 14-7.
On the next drive, Gaffney answered with another touchdown, leading Union 20-7, and with 2:09 left in the third quarter, Gaffney’s TJ Foster scored another TD, increasing his team’s lead to 27-7.
In the fourth quarter, with 6:48 left in the game, Union retaliated with another touchdown from Petty, narrowing the gap and making the score 27-14.
The Yellow Jackets then set up an onside kick, but Gaffney’s Foster recovered possession of the ball. Union County was unable to close the gap in the time remaining, and the Indians handed the Yellow Jackets their second loss of the season with a final score of 27-14.
