UNION — Jonesville, Lockhart and Sims sent three middle school teams to Spartanburg Methodist College on Saturday for the South Carolina Lego League Qualifier.

During the event, teams competed in three main areas: a LEGO robot design and challenge competition, a research project on an original idea for contending with nature’s fury and a team work activity.

As there are literally thousands of teams competing across the country, the overall tournament is broken down into a hierarchal regional structure. Dr. Kristi Woodall stated, “Union County teams were very competitive, with two teams in the Top 5 of the table challenge competition. Students are excited to come back to their clubs and put their knowledge to work as they prepare for next year’s challenge. This was our first year competing and we are very proud of the hard work of our coaches and students.”

FIRST LEGO League is a worldwide competition supported by the LEGO Corporation and other companies and designed for elementary and middle school aged children. The FIRST LEGO League is run by the nonprofit FIRST organization which seeks to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders.
