WHITMIRE — An autopsy is scheduled for this morning on the body of a Woodruff man who was killed in an automobile accident Sunday evening.
The Union County Coroner’s Office issued a press release Monday stating that earlier that morning Tony Curtis Todd, 48, 356 Allen St., Woodrfuff, had died at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia.
The press release states that Todd was one of four occupants of a 1992 Honda that wrecked shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday evening on the Old Bumcombe Road.
The accident is still under investigation by the coroner’s office, the SC Highway Patrol, and the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.).
L/Cpl James Miller, CRO for Troop 4 of the SC Highway Patrol, said Monday afternoon that the accident occurred around 8:20 p.m. Sunday when the Honda and a 2014 BMW were traveling west on the Old Buncombe Road. Miller said the Honda attempted to pass the BMW at what he said is believed to have been an excessive rate of speed. He said the Honda then ran off the side of the of the road, overcorrected, struck an embankment on the left side of the road, reentered the road and struck the BMW before overturning.
In addition to Todd, Miller said the occupants of the Honda at the time of the accident were Ricky Spurgeon, 55, David Spurgeon, 57, both of Gray Court, and Milton Stennhouse, 53, address unknown.
Miller said the driver of the BMW was Emmett Shaw Jr. 49, and the passengers were James A. Thomas, 52, and Erskine Norris, 49, all of Gray Court.
The autopsy on Todd’s body was scheduled to be performed this morning at Newberry Pathology Associates in Newberry.
