UNION — When they check out books patrons of the Union County Carnegie Library now have the option of carrying them home in reusable bags that they can keep and continue to use on future trips to the library.
Previously, library patrons who needed a bag to carry home the books they checked out could get a plastic bag from the library desk. Recently, however, the library has begun offering its patrons a much sturdier alternative to the often flimsy plastic bags.
“We used to have the green plastic bags with the library’s logo, but once we ran out of those we began looking at options to provide patrons with bags to place their library books in,” Library Director Ben Loftis said Tuesday. “One of the solutions was to provide reusable bags for patrons to use.”
Loftis said the reusable bags, which come in a variety of colors, met the library’s need for an alternative that was both sturdy and inexpensive, both for the library and for patrons.
“We’ve been trying to look for inexpensive or free options, but one thing is the plastic bags tear very easily, these are much sturdier,” Loftis said. “The re-usability was a big factor. It’s an alternative to always having to seek donations for plastic bags. The bags we’ve purchased are very popular as tote bags and fairly inexpensive.”
So inexpensive that Loftis said patrons can purchase a reusable bag from the library for $1.
The library began offering the bags several weeks ago, and Loftis that while “we’re still in the early phases of this program, it seems to have been well-received by those who use the bags.”
Another factor in the library’s decision to offer reusable bags is that they are much more environmentally-friendly than plastic bags.
“Obviously this was a big factor, they can be reused and don’t have to be thrown away,” Loftis said.
Even though it is no longer offering the green plastic bags with its logo on it, Loftis said the library still has plastic bags patrons can use if they choose to do so. He said these plastic bags were donated by local businesses and individuals.
“We still have plastic available, but this is an alternative if you want something sturdier and reusable,” Loftis said.
Loftis said the library currently has 25-30 bags for sale. He said any patron who wants one can ask for them at the front desk.
