NEWBERRY — Aviation enthusiasts are invited to journey by plane, train or automobile to Newberry County on Sunday morning for a breakfast at the Newberry County Airport for the South Carolina Pilot’s Breakfast Club.

The annual event is part of the club’s efforts to generate interest in aeronautics through food and fellowship. The Newberry County Airport is located at 1239 Airport Road.

Pilot Sam Hart, chairman of the Newberry Airport Commission Milledge Wilson, local entrepreneurs Billye and Misty West, Newberry County Councilman Scott Cain, Bill Clamp and his father Todd Clamp are among locals assisting in various capacities with the event.

Newberry’s Jim Offett said the event also is a fundraiser for the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Fly Young Eagle’s Program based out of Columbia’s Owens Field.

Offett said last year, despite inclement weather, 35 to 40 people attended, including many from Newberry.

It is hoped that generating more enthusiasm for flying could lead to Newberry one day having its own flight training capabilities.

Offett encouraged the public to come out at 9 a.m. to mingle and hear stories from some octogenarians who continue to fly and from several veterans who are among the pilots.

Weather permitting, he anticipates over 50 airplanes to fly into Newberry for the event.

“Pilot or non-pilot, fly in or drive to the airport, belly up and talk aircraft to your hearts content! We are looking for the old and bold pilots around Newberry to join us,” Offett said.

The group has met every other Sunday since 1938 to have breakfast, so this continues that tradition with a home-cooked, traditional Southern breakfast. The public is invited and welcome to come buy a ticket and take part in the event.
