UNION — University of South Carolina Union will welcome William “Bill” Comer as the commencement speaker for the university’s Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 3 at 6 p.m. in the Truluck Activity Center.
Comer is a Union native and 1973 graduate of Union High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Wofford College in 1977. Comer then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in Accounting from the University of South Carolina in 1982. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Comer has over 30 years of accounting, finance, general management and board experience in domestic and international companies that are publicly-held, privately-owned, and not-for-profit. As Executive Vice President, CFO and Treasurer of American Specialty Health (ASH), Comer is responsible for the management and oversight of all financial and reporting matters. With offices in San Diego, Indianapolis, Dallas and Columbia, ASH is one of the nation’s leading health and wellness companies, providing health plans and employer groups with a wide range of population health management, fitness and exercise, and specialty health care management programs to improve the health of their members or employees.
Prior to joining ASH in September 2008, Comer was Vice President and Chief Audit and Compliance Officer for Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, a publicly-held pharmaceuticals company formerly based in Aliso Viejo, CA. In this role, he was responsible for managing Valeant’s global internal audit and regulatory compliance activities
Comer previously served as CFO of Valeant’s publicly-held research and development subsidiary, where he managed its accounting and financial operations, implemented SOx 404, participated in the implementation and management of several multi-million dollar global clinical trials, started and managed a distribution company in Southeast Asia, and served as Board Chairman for Valeant’s Singapore-based companies. He is highly regarded as a mentor, “change agent” and has built his reputation on a commitment to team building and high ethical standards.
