SANTUC — A Union man was killed and four other people left hospitalized when the car they were in ran off the Whitmire Highway and into several trees Monday afternoon.


L/Cpl. Gary Miller of the SC Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred around 2:24 p.m. on the Whitmire Highway (US 176) approximately seven miles east of Union. Miller said the accident involved a 1994 Toyota 4-Runner which was traveling west when it ran off the left side of the road, went down the embankment and ran into the trees. He said the accident is still under investigation.


Miller said that the driver of the car was killed and the four passengers, among them a child, suffered injuries requiring hospitalization.


In a statement released Monday night, Union County Coroner William E. Holcombe identified the deceased as Ricky Dale Keisler Jr., 39, Union. Holcombe said he pronounced Keisler dead at the scene of the accident around 2:50 p.m. He said that an autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Keisler’s body today at Newberry Pathology Associates, Inc.


Miller identified the adult passengers in the vehicle as Shannon Rachel Barber, 28, Union; Brandi Julie Northern, 26, Union; and Paul David Thomas, 40, Union. He said that Barber and Thomas were transported by Union County EMS to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center while Northern and the child who was also in the vehicle were transported by helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital.
