UNION COUNTY — The talent of three Union County High School band students was recognized as they were chosen to participate in Region Band.
Region Band is an opportunity for South Carolina band students who are dedicated to concert performance. The process of being part of a region band includes a series of auditions to choose the best musicians from each of the five regions in South Carolina. Union County is part of Region III, along with Cherokee, Chester, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Newberry, Richland and York counties.
The audition process includes prepared solos, scales, musical terms, and sight-reading. After the top students have been chosen, they are invited to participate in the annual Region Band Clinics. These clinics bring together students from middle schools and high schools from throughout the region for two days of rehearsals under the baton of a guest clinician. At the conclusion of the clinic, the region bands perform the pieces they have prepared over the previous two days.
This year’s Region III auditions were held Jan. 11, at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, and clinics and performances were held Feb. 21-22 at Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill. Three Union County students were selected to participate.
Union County senior Ryan West (3rd chair senior percussion) and junior Kadin Ivey (6th chair senior saxophone) were part of the Region III Senior Band, under the direction of Robin Christian from Ringgold High School in Ringgold, Ga. Union County sophomore Dalen White (7th chair clinic trombone) was part of the Region III Clinic Band, under the direction of Larry Wells, Interim Associate Director of Bands for Winthrop University.
“These students certainly worked very hard to achieve this honor,” said Union County Band Director Matthew Chastain. “It is remarkable when an individual possesses both the talent and work ethic needed to excel at this level. These students are great examples of what is possible when students make a conscious decision to pursue excellence.”
