UNION COUNTY — Business in the 21st century increasingly involves the Internet and the Union County Chamber of Commerce wants to help local small businesses get online to increase the amount of business they’re doing.

Executive Director Torance Inman said that the chamber will conduct an “Online Visibility Success” workshop on Wednesday at the SCWorks office at 103 W. Main St., Union. Inman said the workshop will consist of two sessions with the first held from noon-1:30 p.m. For those who are unable to attend the first session, Inman said there will be a second session from 2-3:30 p.m.

Inman said that while many businesses are already doing business online, many small businesses are not.

“We’ve discovered statistically that approximately 90 percent of all businesses do some type of online transactions,” Inman said. “However, just a little more than 50 percent of small businesses are actually online.”

Inman said the goal of the workshop will be not only show small business owners how to get their businesses online but also show them the importance of doing so.

“The purpose of the workshop is to educate small businesses on the importance and benefit it is for them to be online and show them how to get it done,” Inman said. “We’ll show them how to buy their domain name, where to buy them, and what to buy. We’ll also give instructions as to what should be on the website, which in turn will optimize their presence on search engines. We’ll also give some instruction on how to use the website with social media.”

Inman said that persons interested in taking the workshop should call the Union County Chamber of Commerce at 864-427-9039. He said there will be a small fee of $25 per person and $15 per person for chamber members.

Light refreshments will be served during the workshop.

In addition to the chamber, the workshop is also sponsored by South Carolina SBDC, the City of Union, and SCWorks.

Business After Hours

In addition to conducting the workshop on Wednesday, Inman said the chamber will hold its first Business After Hours for 2014 on Thursday from 5-7:30 p.m. at Heartland Healthcare of Union.

“There will be live music, food, and door prizes,” Inman said. “We encourage not only chamber members but other businesses and organizations to attend and bring a guest.”

Every year, the chamber holds four Business After Hours events to provide local businesses and other organizations the opportunity to meet in a relaxed setting. Each Business After Hours is sponsored by four local businesses and this year’s sponsors are Costco Wholesale, Charter Business, Upstate Medical Supply, and Medi Home Hospice.

Inman added that the host of Thursday’s Business After Hours, Heartland Healthcare of Union is the former Oakmont. He said Heartland is urging those who plan to attend the Business After Hours to “come out and look at us now.”
