UNION — It wasn’t supposed to open until 10 a.m. but the large number of hungry people waiting outside its doors forced Union’s new Waffle House to open nearly an hour early Thursday morning.

“We couldn’t keep them out,” Waffle House Human Resources Specialist Tifanny Geter said as customers continued to enter the restaurant to place their orders with the staff who worked to prepare the meals ordered and serve them as quickly as possible.

Geter said that while the restaurant was originally scheduled to open at 10 a.m., it did so 40 minutes early at 9:20 a.m. because of the large number of customers who were already lining up to get in. Those first customers and the ones that followed throughout the mornning quickly filled all the restaurant’s booths and all the chairs at its counter.

Even though its actual opening changed, Geter said that one thing that hasn’t changed is that now that its doors are open they will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We’re officially open now and we never close,” Geter said. “We’re slowly getting the word out that we never close.”

Geter said that even before the restaurant opened, she was already hearing from local residents looking forward to having a restaurant in town that is always open.

“I saw this lady last night who is staying at a local motel while her house is being renovated,” Geter said. “She said she was looking for somewhere to get a meal and she said that this would have been perfect if we had been open. Well we are open now and, again, we never close.”

Regardless of whether they dine in the morning, the afternoon, the evening, or after midnight, Waffle House customers can order breakfast, lunch or dinner. The restaurant’s menu includes:

• Breakfast — Eggs, waffles, hash browns, omelets, bacon, and sausage

• Lunch — Angus burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches

• Dinner — Pork chops, t-bone steaks, and ribeye steaks

Even though the new restaurant is fully staffed, Geter said applications are still being accepted from persons interested in working for Waffle House.

“We’re still looking for personnel,” Geter said. “When you have a 24-hour business you are always looking for personnel.”

Geter said anyone interested in working at the restaurant should apply there.
