SPARTANBURG — The farmers of Union County now have a new representative on the Spartanburg/Union/Cherokee Farm Service Agency County Committee

In a statement released Friday, Glenn Thomas, County Executive Director of the Spartanburg/Union/Cherokee FSA, announced that eligible voters in Union County (LAA-3) elected Guy Michael Scales, to represent them on the Spartanburg/Union/Cherokee FSA County Committee for the next three years. Mr. Steve Freeman was an eligible write-in candidate and was elected to serve as the first alternate. The Spartanburg/Union/Cherokee FSA County Committee is divided into three Local Administrative Areas (LAA’s). Each LAA (county) is represented by one member on the County Committee.

The FSA County Committee is the most direct link between USDA farm programs and producers. The County Committee system helps shape nation-wide programs into programs that work at the local level.

Duties of County Committee members include:

• informing farmers of the purpose and provisions of FSA Programs;

• keeping the state FSA committee informed of local administrative area conditions;

• recommending needed changes in farm programs;

• participating in county meetings as necessary;

• performing other duties as assigned by the State FSA Committee.

“It’s important that the Committee represents all of the agricultural interests in Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee Counties, “Mr. Thomas said. “The Farm Service Agency works with all kind of farmers — small and large operators, truck farmers, as well as growers of specialty crops.”

The FSA Office serving Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee Counties is located at 105 Corporate Dr., Suite G, in Spartanburg and can be reached at (864) 814-2471, extension 2. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
