SPARTANBURG — Union County residents looking for jobs and local companies looking to hire are invited to register to take part in the SCWorks Annual Job Fair in March.

During Wednesday’s meeting of the Union County Advanced Technology Center Advisory Committee, SCWorks Regional Business Services Manager Johnnie Lynn Crosby announced the job fair will be held Thursday, March 27, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in the second floor gym of the Spartanburg Community College Campus, 220 E. Kennedy St., Spartanburg.

Crosby said the job fair is an annual event sponsored by SCWorks to bring together businesses and job seekers in Union, Spartanburg, and Cherokee counties. She said the event is free for both businesses and job seekers, but said that those who want to participate should register to do so as soon as possible.

“We will have approximately 50 employers who will be conducting interviews, who will be talking with candidates on-site,” Crosby said. “Any employer wanting to register to attend can contact me via email at jcrosby@scworksupstate.com. There is no fee to participate either for the job candidate or the employer, but employers who want to participate must register by March 24.”

Crosby said that while the job fair will begin at 8 a.m., the general public will not be admitted until 9 a.m. She said the first hour will be reserved for veterans and for holders of the “preferred pass” issued by SCWorks to job seekers who meet the following criteria:

• Be registered in scworks.org

• Have a professional, up-to-date resume

• Complete a generic application

• Are interview ready

• Show they can dress to impress

Crosby said job seekers who apply for a preferred pass must attend a preferred pass workshop at and obtain a job fair portfolio from their nearest SCWorks office. She said SCWorks staff can provide job seekers with assistance in meeting the criteria required such as helping them make sure their resume is up-to-date and professional looking.

The importance of being prepared to meet with employers attending the job fair is demonstrated by the fact that, in the past, as many as 50 people are hired during the job fair and twice as many line up additional job interviews.

“Typically we have approximately 20-50 that land jobs on the spot,” Crosby said. “Up to a hundred-plus obtain job interviews during the fair.”

Union County residents interested in applying for a preferred pass can do so at the SCWorks Union office at 103 W. Main St., Union. For more information call 864-427-4119.
