CROSS KEYS — Firefighters from three counties and the U.S. Forestry Service were working Tuesday night to contain and extinguish a fire that destroyed a house and has spread into the surrounding woods in the Cross Keys community.
Union County Sheriff David Taylor said all of Union County’s fire departments “plus one or two from Spartanburg and Laurens counties” are battling a blaze at 3531 Cross Keys Highway. Taylor said the fire is believed to have started around the chimney before spreading to the rest of the house which he described as a total loss. He said the fire is believed to have started as a result of an accident.
Taylor said that while the fire began in the house, it has now spread somewhat into the surrounding woods. He said the U.S. Forestry Service has been called to the scene and is using a bulldozer to try and contain the blaze.
Taylor said no one has been injured by the blaze.
Firefighters were still on the scene at press time. For more on Tuesday’s fire see Thursday’s edition of The Union Daily Times and online at www.uniondailytimes.com.
