UNION — The new year is bringing big changes for the Union County Arts Council’s gallery on Main Street. The old floor is being ripped out and a new one will be installed. The work is likely to have UCAC closed through the end of January.
“We began to notice a while back that the floor had a lot of ‘mushy’ spots in it,” said UCAC coordinator Jackie Senn. “Then our tiles began to crack and the slightest weight would actually put a hole through them. So we did some further investigation and found a lot of moisture in the wood sub-floor which was causing the wood to rot.”
The only solution to the problem was to completely tear out the old floor and start from scratch. Along with the floor repairs, the plans call for painting the gallery area, adding new molding around the top of the walls for hanging art and adding electrical outlets along one wall.
All of UCAC’s programs are cancelled for January and, barring any major setback, will begin again in February.
“We really hate to have to cancel everything,” Senn said. “We just hope that everyone in our art, writing and music groups will be as excited as we are to come back in to, basically, a brand-new facility.”
