Church has clothes closet ministry

UNION — A local church is using a clothes closet to not only provide clothing to the needy but also to minister to their spiritual needs.
The Union Church of Christ’s clothes closet is open twice a month on Saturdays from 10 a.m-noon. The clothes closet was open this past Saturday under the supervision of church member Shirley Vanderford, her husband and her daughter. Vanderford said the clothes closet was the idea of a church member and complements the church’s food ministry.
“We have our food giveaway about four times a year in our fellowship hall and the food is free,” Vanderford said. “Then one of our members, Scot Heatherly, decided that maybe we could do a clothes closet. So we got it approved by our elders and then opened it on Nov. 16.”
Vanderford said that almost all the clothes at the clothes closet have been donated by members of the congregation. She said that in addition to providing free clothing to those who need them, the church also shares the gospel and extends an invitation to those who visit the clothes closet.
“We’ve had a lot from the congregation and then there were some donated from outside the congregation,” Vanderford said. “The clothes are free and we give everyone a tract and invite them to our congregation if they would like to come.”
Since the clothes closet opened, Vanderford said it has provided clothing and tracts to 70 people.
Vanderford said the clothes closet is not affiliated with any other organization, but is strictly a ministry of the church supported by the donations of its congregation.
“We’ve seen people we thought would need some clothes,” Vanderford said. “We thought we could be a presence in the community because we try to help. We want to put the church out there to let them know they can attend and that we will try to help them if we can.”
For those who need the clothes closet but cannot be there when it is open, Vanderford said they can call and make an appointment. She said they can call her at 864-427-5204 or Scot Heatherly at 864-384-1726.
