UNION COUNTY — Tickets are now available for the second of two fundraisers the Union County Healthcare Foundation is holding this year on behalf of the Union County EMS.

In October, Foundation Executive Director Catherine Childers announced that the foundation’s annual Charity Golf Classic had raised nearly $5,000 or roughly a quarter of the $20,000 the group is hoping to raise to help the EMS purchase a new ambulance.

The foundation is looking to raise more funds to go toward the purchase of the ambulance through its Christmas Tour of Homes which Childers said will be held be held Saturday, Dec. 7, from 4-7 p.m.

Childers announced this week that tickets for the tour will be available Monday, Nov. 4 at Wallace Thomson Hospital, WBCU Radio Station, Paradise Home Center, Midway BBQ, Forest Street Grill, and Lockhart Café. The tickets cost $15 each.

This will be the second Christmas Tour of Homes the foundation has sponsored. The first, which was held in 2012, featured six stops including the Cross Keys House, Meador Home, Hill Home, Nicholson Mansion, First Baptist Church, and Wallace Thomson Hospital. The tour, along with that year’s golf classic, was part of the foundation’s efforts to raise funds for the purchase of a Cardiovascular Diagnostic Stress Testing System for the hospital.

Childers added that the names of the homes on this year’s tour will be announced next week.

In addition to the funds raised by the foundation, the purchase of the new ambulance will also be funded through part of a $250,000 grant awarded to the Union Hospital District by the Timken Foundation of Canton, Ohio. The district will receive $130,000 the first year of the two-year grant. Those funds will be used together with the $20,000 raised by the foundation to purchase the ambulance.

The district will receive the balance of the grant ($120,000) the second year and will use it to help build a helicopter landing pad next to Wallace Thomson Hospital. This part of the grant comes with the stipulation that the district raise $60,000 from the community by September 2014.

The Union County Health Care Foundation is a network of caring individuals whose goal is to identify and secure additional funding to supplement the efforts of Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, EMS, and the local medical community in providing high quality, cost effective health care.

In order to do this, the foundation owns 30 percent of American HomePatient, Union’s local supplier for CPAP and oxygen. This partnership pays for all the foundation’s administrative costs, which allows 100 percent of all funds raised to be applied to its mission. At the present time the foundation has raised a little over $1.7 million for the health care needs of Union County.
