Wood Magic Forest Fair

WHITMIRE — On Oct. 9, 2013, our fourth grade classes went to Wood Magic Forest Fair at Harbison State Forest. The first thing we did was take a class picture. Then we went inside and two men who worked there told us about wood’s uses and showed us a remarkable video about the Fred the Tree’s life, whose goal was to be used in a home.

Our guide took us to different stations. The first station we went to was the sawmill. We saw a log get cut and learned what each part of the log is used for. After a snack of popcorn and lemonade, we went inside to make our own paper. They taught us about landfills. We made our own paper and learned a song about reduce, reuse, recycle. We learned an acronym, NIMBY, which stands for Not In My Back Yard!

At the fire station, they taught us about how they set safe fires in the forest to improve the forest. Dr. Mike showed us how they burn a forest so animals can find food easier. He actually prescribes fires for the forest! At the last station, we studied the gifts the forest gives us. We played a game with strings that showed how all the animals, plants, and people were connected to the forest.

At the end, we got a gift bag with a t-shirt, block of cedar wood, pencils, cup, bracelet, and much more. Wood Magic was extraordinary!
