UNION — The 2013 Union County Agricultural Fair has officially kicked off.
The Union County Fair Association hosted a special kick-off for invited guests Monday evening. After a meal and fellowship, fair association executive director Paul Winters presented a special service award to board member Harry Helms, who is currently serving his last year on the board. Winters said Helms has been a community leader for many years, and he pointed out that Helms is a charter member and former chief of the Bonham Fire Department. Helms was also a reserve deputy for the Union County Sheriff’s Office for years. Helms’ award was in recognition of eight years of dedicated service on the board.
“When Harry has something to say, the board always listens,” Winters said.
Winters also listed some of the highlight attractions scheduled for this year’s fair including Kachunga and the Alligator Show, the Texaco Country Showdown state finals for North and South Carolina, Hogway Speedway pig and goat racing, Trans-South Wrestling, and clown/comedian/magician/balloon artist Greg “Mr. Greggy” Mahan, who performed Monday evening. Winters reiterated that there are special events planned for each night of the fair.
“We don’t want you to come out here just one day; we want you to come many days,” Winters said.
