UNION — The Union County Relay for Life has officially kicked off fund raising efforts for its 2014 relay.
Union County Relay for Life held a meeting Tuesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church which began with a celebration of accomplishments for 2013.
Union County was recognized on Sept. 28 at the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life conference at Dorman High School for being the No. 1 fund raising relay in the Upstate per capita. Union County Relay for Life raised a total of $104,939 for 2013, which is $3.84 per person in the county. Union County’s relay was also recognized for having 100 percent school participation and belonging to the $100,000 club.
After those announcements, the focus of those in attendance Tuesday was shifted to the future, as event chair Beth Lancaster announced the theme for the 2014 relay — “We Believe.”
“We believe … in celebrating survivors, in remembering loved ones lost, in fighting back against cancer, in hope, and in a cure!” Lancaster said.
The 2014 relay will be held May 9-10 at the Union County Fairgrounds.
Two new teams were announced for 2014 — Bethel Baptist Church and the Cross Keys Cancer Crushers (a.k.a. the Barrett family). There are also two new committee members — Reba Vinson, the new accounting chair, and Jordan Bright, the new sponsorship chair.
“We are very excited to have these two ladies on our committee,” Lancaster said.
Lancaster said returning teams have already begun fund raising, mentioning that Union County High School, Sims Middle School, and Jonesville K-8 have Crucial Catch (breast cancer awareness) football games in the next couple weeks. Lancaster asked those in attendance to support all school teams, as well as other relay teams, in their fund raising efforts.
“The teams are trying to fund raise year round because cancer is 365 days a year; it never sleeps!” Lancaster said.
Relay for Life teams may be started at any time by contacting event chair Beth Lancaster at (864) 426-3438 or Torance Inman, event co-chair, at (864) 426-0883.
The first team captain’s meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14, 2014, at Tabernacle Baptist Church Family Life Center.
