UNION — The SCWorks Union office provides a number of services for businesses looking to hold job fairs or hiring events and a former official is availing herself of those services by holding a job fair at the office Thursday morning.

Located at 103 W. Main St., the SCWorks office has been the site of a number of job fairs or hiring events in recent months hosted by a variety of employers including Quality Inn, the S.C. Department of Corrections, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, the Dollar General Distribution Center, VPS Convenience Stores, and Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, as well as staffing agencies representing local or area businesses. SCWorks provided these and other companies with space for their job fairs/hiring events, promoting them in the community, and administrative services.

“Our doors are open to all businesses in the Upstate, and especially at that location, Union County,” SCWorks Business Services Consultant Anthony Vitale said Monday. “We encourage companies to utilize our space for recruiting events.”

One of those companies is the Union franchise of Liberty Tax Service which will be hosting a job fair at SCWorks from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday. The franchise is owned by Katherine Pendergrass who preceded Vitale as businesses services consultant at the SCWorks Union office. Pendergrass said Monday that she is holding the job fair because she is “building a new team from the bottom up.”

Pendergrass said she is looking to hire tax preparers, a manager, two receptionists, and a marketing manager. She said the positions, both part-time and full-time, are seasonal. In addition, Pendergrass said persons who apply for the positions will have to undergo training as part of the hiring process.

“All those who are interviewed must go through a training session,” Pendergrass said. “If they complete the training session and pass certification they may be offered a position.”

While previous experience in those positions is preferred, Pendergrass said it is not required.

“I’m interested in persons with experience in those areas, but will consider those who do not simply because we have a training program that can equip them with the tools we are looking for,” Pendergrass said. “For those who do not have the experience, I will consider them based on their previous work record, motivation, and willingness to learn. I’m looking at the complete package, a person’s demeanor, how they dress for the interview, how they present themselves, and how well they articulate their responses.”

Pendergrass said that persons interested in the positions should bring with them a resume, a list of three references, and their identification to Thursday’s job fair.

In addition to providing them with space for job fairs/hiring events, Vitale said SCWorks also makes space available for employers conducting job training for their employees.

“They can use our space for training,” Vitale said. “As a matter of fact, Waffle House is going to be using our space for training this week. They are opening a restaurant soon next to Shoe Store.”

Pendergrass said that she hopes to use SCWorks for at least some of the training sessions for potential employees. She said other sessions will be held at Liberty Tax Service, 719 N. Duncan Bypass, Union.
