Monday, Sept. 2


• Light up the Lake, Union County’s Annual Fireworks display at Foster Park Lake will held at 6 p.m. Sponsored by the Union County Recreation Department and the Union County Chamber of Commerce, the event will feature music and entertainment provided “Prettier than Matt” and “Voices of Truth.” A Flag Retirement Ceremony lead by the Boy Scouts will be held following the music. The fireworks will immediately follow the ceremony. Food vendors will be available. Bring your lawn chair and hang out with us!


Tuesday, Sept. 3


• The Union County Council Committee on Personnel, County Offices and Departments meets at 5:15 p.m. in the Grand Jury Room at the Union County Courthouse to discuss personnel and other matters. The public is invited to attend.


• The Union County Council Committee on County Administration and Finance meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Jury Room at the Union County Courthouse to discuss the Buffalo Mill property and other administrative and financial matters. The public is invited to attend.


• The Union County Council holds a special meeting immediately following the meeting of the Committee on County Administration and Finance already scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Jury Room at the Union County Courthouse to receive reports from the committees and discuss other matters. The public is invited to attend.

• The Carlisle Finishing Retirement Group meets at 9 a.m. for breakfast at Mid-Way. Our guest speaker will be Rep. Mike Anthony of S.C. House District #42. This year, Rep. Anthony has put his hat in the ring for State Superintendent of Education. Rep. Anthony will explain to the group some of his ideas that will improve the education system in our state. • Betsy and Company presents a one day trip to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino. There will be an 8:30 a.m. pickup at the Jonesville, Municipal Building and a 9 a.m. pickup in Union at the Old Walmart Parking Lot. Proceeds will go for the Relay-For-Life. For information call Betsy at 864-674-6799.

• The Union County Historical Society holds its Quarterly Meeting at 3 p.m. in the Union County Museum meeting room. As usual, the back door will be open for those wishing to avoid the stairs.The speaker will be Dr. Rodger Stroup, Director of the S.C. Railroad Museum. Dr. Stroup is well known for his leadership and years of experience working in the state at the SC State Museum and as the previous Director of the SC Dept. of Archives & History. His presentation will be on the history of South Carolina Railroading.

• Members of UCAC’s “Monday Night Music” group will be performing on the Art Walk Acoustic Stage during Uniquely Union. • The Union County Arts Council will host a Wine Tasting in conjunction with the Uniquely Union Festival. The Shelton Winery from Dobson, N.C. will provide the wine. This UCAC fund-raiser will help provide art exhibits and workshops to the community. Union County Council holds its regular monthly meeting the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Jury Room of the Union County Courthouse. The dates for the 2013 meetings are Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.
