UNION — Amazing! Breathtaking! Wonderful! Wow!

Those are just some of the words used when people try to describe the art of Diarmuid Kelly.

Kelly, who moved from Ireland in 2007 to continue his art career in the United States, settled in Spartanburg after looking for a new home away from his Irish roots.

“Following some extensive research and several trips to the Carolinas, we decided to make the move and settled in Spartanburg because of the art scene there, in Greenville and the surrounding counties,” said Kelly. “The people of the Carolinas were very welcoming; a fact that has helped us to settle in the United States much quicker than we would have ever thought possible.”

After taking home the Bill McCall People’s Choice Award in the last two UCAC Juried Art Shows, Kelly is back. This time he’s on board with UCAC as the juror for this year’s show, a workshop instructor and he is also having his own exhibit at the UCAC gallery.

As this year’s juror, he had the task of wading through the nearly one hundred entries that came in from as far away as Michigan. His seventy choices for the show will be on display at USC-Union’s main building from Sept. 26 through Oct. 25. The opening reception and awards presentations will be held at the same location on Sept. 26 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

Kelly’s oil painting workshop is scheduled for Sept. 27-28 at the UCAC gallery on Main Street in Union. The workshop, “Draw It, Paint It — An Introduction to Oils” will be focusing on portraits.

“We will be looking at how to start a portrait, composition and underpainting,” Kelly explained. “We’ll also cover tone, color value, technique, brushes to use and tips that will take your portraits to the next level. This is an introduction to oils but if you have painted in oils before you will certainly have an advantage when taking this class.”

The exhibit of Kelly’s paintings is shaping up to be one of the finest shows to be hosted at UCAC and will feature around thirty of his newest paintings. His show will run from Sept. 1 through Oct. 1 and will be held at the UCAC gallery.
