UNION COUNTY — A parade through the streets of Union will be held Thursday to honor the Union County High School Yellow Jackets softball team and the Union County High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, Jeff Stribble, Director of Personnel and Student Services for the Union County School District, announced that a parade will be held in honor of the UCHS Yellow Jackets softball team and Indoor Percussion Ensemble on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The parade will begin on Main Street at the Union County YMC and end at the Union County Courthouse.
Stribble said that the parade will be followed by a brief ceremony at the courthouse. He said that Union County Supervisor Tommy Sinclair, City of Union Mayor Harold Thompson, UCHS Principal Floyd Lyles, and Softball Coach Tommy Petty will each make brief remarks.
The parade is being held to honor the Lady Jackets who on Saturday became the 2014 3A State Softball Champions after defeating Hartsville in the second of two championship games. The best-of-three state championship series began this past Wednesday at the Timken Sports Complex where the Lady Jackets defeated Hartsville 4-3. The series continued and concluded on Saturday at Hartsville where the Lady Jackets gained the championship with a winning score of 8-5.
Also being honored Thursday is the UCHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble which in April placed 14th in the WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. This was preceded in March by the ensemble winning the State Championship at the South Carolina Band Director’s Association Winter Ensemble State Championships.
