As the Internet becomes more and more prevalent in everyday life, it is important that organizations maintain a presence online to allow users access to information. The Union County Carnegie Library maintains a website at unionlibrary.org which features information about the library’s services and events, as well as various links to other resources.

As I have mentioned in this space before, the library’s website allows you to access the SCLENDS catalog, DISCUS resources, and the HeritageQuest ancestry site. The UCCL website features much more information than those three items. In addition to the catalog, DISCUS, and HeritageQuest links, the library’s homepage also includes links to Learn a Language, a free language learning website, and the South Carolina Day by Day Literacy Calendar offered by the SC State Library, featuring resources for literacy activities with young children. Also included with the Day by Day calendar is TumbleBooks, an online collection of talking picture books. Also included on the library’s homepage is a link to the SC Department of Employment and Workforce’s MyBenefits login page. New links are added periodically to provide easy access to needed, relevant websites.

The website also provides library information. An events tab is located at the top of the page and provides a calendar of programs, events, and closings at the library. The “Employment” tab provides an up-to-date listing of job opportunities at UCCL when positions become available, while the “Friends” tab provides membership information about the Friends of the Union County Carnegie Library. The “About Us” page includes information such as the library’s mission and vision statements, the library’s Code of Conduct, information about the Best Small Library in America award, and a history of the Union County Carnegie Library.

Finally, the right hand column on every page of the website provides consistent information about library services. Included there is information about the library’s public access computers, various free genealogy resources (including links to many different free websites), a listing of library holidays and closings, and information about how to obtain a free library card. Also included in this column are the hours of operation of the library as well as the library’s contact information. Finally, this column includes links to the library’s social media pages including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube.
