UNION COUNTY — A close game in Newberry ended in a last-minute loss for Union County.
The Yellow Jackets are now 1-1 after going on the road to Newberry on Friday. Coming off a win at home over Gaffney, the team’s first away game of the season was lost in the final seconds of the game.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, and the first play of the second quarter — a pass from Union County QB De’Arrius Smith to WR Shi Smith — took the Yellow Jackets within a few yards of the end zone. WR Shemar Glenn caught the touchdown pass from Smith and Union County took a 7-0 lead.
Newberry then answered back with a touchdown and extra point to tie the game 7-7.
With just over three minutes left in the second quarter, a touchdown pass from Smith to Montrey Feaster and the PAT by Blake Berry gave the Jackets a 14-7 lead.
With 40 seconds left in the half, Newberry answered back with a touchdown of their own, but without the extra point, Union County held a one-point lead at 14-13.
With four seconds left in the half, Newberry intercepted the ball and scored a touchdown and two-point conversion, giving them a 21-14 lead.
In the second half, a 73-yard punt return by Shi Smith tied the game 28-28, and another touchdown by Shi Smith gave the Yellow Jackets a 35-28 lead. Newberry answered, narrowing Union County’s lead to 35-34. Then, a turnover by Union County led to a score by Newberry, with the final score of the game at 40-35.
The Yellow Jackets will play their second straight road game this week in Spartanburg.
