CARLISLE — A mobile mammography unit will be part of the Town of Carlisle’s 11th Community Fun Day Cookout & Back to School Bash on Saturday.
Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn announced Thursday morning that the mobile mammography unit will be at the Carlisle Playground from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The mammography unit and the examinations are being provided by the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health, a division of Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Nancy Waddell, a Lay Navigator for the center, said Thursday afternoon that 19 women have already signed up to receive exams at the unit on Saturday. Waddell said that only three appointments are still available for women wanting to undergo a mammogram while the unit is in Carlisle. To make an appointment, Waddell said women should call 864-216-5912 as soon as possible.
If they are not able to schedule an appointment for Saturday, Waddell said women should still call and schedule an appointment for Aug. 22 when the unit will be parked in the Walmart parking lot.
Waddell added that women over the age of 35 who are without health insurance qualify for an assistance program provided by the center. She said that for those women who meet this criteria their mammogram is free of charge.
For women over the age of 40, Waddell said they should have an annual screening mammogram.
The mammography unit is part of the Fun Day Cookout & Back to School bash the town is sponsoring Saturday at the Carlisle Playground from 2-7 p.m.
Described by Ferguson-Glenn as a “family event” that will feature a number of family-oriented activities including food, horse rides, a slip-n-slide, face painting, a talent/fashion show, and music provided by a DJ.
While intended to be an afternoon of fun for the family, Ferguson-Glenn said the main focus will be on helping the children of the Carlisle community prepare for the state of the 2014-2015 school year on Monday. To do that, the town will distribute book bags filled with school supplies to the children attending the event.
Municipal Administrator Shannon McBride said Thursday that the town still need donations of book bags and school supplies as well as volunteers to help fill and distribute the book bags.
In addition to the book bags, the following school supplies are also needed:
• Composition books
• Notebook paper
• Glue sticks
• Pencil boxes
• Magic markers
• No. 2 pencils
• Dry erase markers
• Colored pencils
• No. 5 subject books
• Post-it notes
The book bags and school supplies will be distributed to children ranging from kindergarten to high school.
Anyone who wants to make a donation and/or volunteer to help with the Community Fun Day Cookout & Back to School Bash should contact the Carlisle Town Hall at 864-427-1505.
