CARLISLE — For the 11th year in a row the Town of Carlisle will distribute school supplies and the back packs to carry them to the children of the community and is asking for donations and volunteers to help with the distribution.
Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn announced Wednesday that the town will hold its 11th Community Fun Day Cookout & Back to School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 2-6 p.m. at the Carlisle Playground on Pinckney and Cambridge streets.
Ferguson-Glenn said that, as in previous years, the event will feature a number of family-oriented activities including music, face painting, a talent show, a fashion show, food, and other activities that will be announced later.
“It’s going to be a family event,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “It’s a family day, a day the family can come together for fun, for food, and music.”
While the event is intended to be an afternoon of fun for the entire family, Ferguson-Glenn said the main focus will be on helping prepare the children of the Carlisle community for the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year. She said plans are to distribute book bags full of school supplies to the communnity’s children. To ensure that all the community’s children are provided with those items, Ferguson-Glenn said the town is asking for donations of school supplies and book bags.
“Our main focus is to provide school supplies for the children,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We’re going to try to supply as many book bags filled with school supplies as possible. To do that we need donations of book bags and we need donations of the school supplies that we will put in them.”
In addition to the book bags, Ferguson-Glenn said the following school supplies are needed:
• Composition books
• Notebook paper
• Glue sticks
• Pencil boxes
• Magic markers
• No. 2 pencils
• Dry erase markers
• Colored pencils
• No. 5 subject books
• Post-it notes
When the town first began holding its Commuity Fun Day Cookout & Back to School Bash, the school supplies were distributed only to the younger children. At last year’s event, they were also distributed to high school students. Ferguson-Glenn said this was because the town had learned that there was as much of a need for school supplies and book bags among high school students as among the younger children. She said that like last year’s distribution, this year’s will also be for all students ranging from kindergarten through high school.
Ferguson-Glenn said the town also needs volunteers to help pack the book bags with the school supplies and to distribute them on the day of the Community Fun Day Cookout & Back to School Bash.
Anyone who wants to make a donation and/or volunteer to help with the Community Fun Day Cookout & Back to School Bash should contact the Carlisle Town Hall at 864-427-1505.
