UNION — They began arriving as early as 10 p.m. the previous night and by the time it opened Monday morning the line of customers waiting to eat at the new Zaxby’s restaurant stretched around more than half the building.

Local officials joined with the Zaxby’s staff and management and the waiting customers Monday morning for the ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opening the restaurant which is located at 600 N. Duncan Bypass in Union.

A short time later at 10:30 a.m. the restaurant opened its doors for the first time to customers, some of whom had been waiting for it to open since Sunday night.

“They started coming at 10 o’clock last night,” General Manager Akeema Robertson said. “When I came in at seven this morning there were 65 camped out.”

In addition to the opportunity to be the first to dine at the Union Zaxby’s and enjoy its prepared-at-order chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches and salads, the long line of customers was no doubt drawn by the chance of getting a Zaxby’s Fanatic Pack with 52 FREE Dealz. The Fanatic Packs, which were offered by Zaxby’s in celebration of Monday’ grand opening, were awarded to the first 100 customers in line who, once a week on the dates specified for one year, would be able to enjoy menu favorites like a free Meal Deal, a free Milkshake, a free Zappetizer, and more at the Union restaurant.

The new restaurant is the first Zaxby’s in Union County and the 82nd in South Carolina. Zaxby’s currently operates more than 610 locations in 15 states..

Local officials welcomed the restaurant’s arrival in Union County pointing to it as a sign of economic growth in the county.

“Welcome Zaxby’s, this community has been waiting a long time,” Union County Supervisor Tommy Sinclair said. “On behalf of our community I welcome you here. Anyone out there would have a personal comment about Zaxby’s coming to Union, mine is I will not have to go to Spartanburg anymore for my granddaughter.

“But what this really means is that or what it represents (is) we are growing, we are catching up with other communities,” he said. “More and more we will have to go to Spartanburg less and less. You are the first of many. We have exciting times ahead. Zaxby’s we welcome you, we thank you, we look forward to a long relationships as you join our community.”

Similar sentiments were expressed by Union County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Torance Inman.

“I’ll echo what Tommy Sinclair said, Zaxby’s being here is one more reason we don’t have to drive to Spartanburg,” Inman said. “Union is on the move and if you look around you’ll see other areas pushing dirt to make additional improvements in the retail areas. We’re starting to grow and Zaxby’s is another example of that growth.”

Chamber President Pam Roberts said “we’re excited to have Zaxby’s come to Union and be part of our family.”

Also taking part in the ceremony was Zaxby’s Area Development Manager Carolyns Barrs who spoke of the restaurant’s role in providing jobs and its ability to make other contributions to Union County.

“We’re just glad to be here, to provide so many jobs for the community,” Barrs said. “We can provide clubs and organizations with fundraisers to help our community.”

The new 3,847-square-foot restaurant seats 90 and also provides drive-thru service. It is open from 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. on Sunday.

Zaxby’s offers prepared-at-order chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches and salads. Its most popular items are its hand-breaded Chicken Fingerz and Traditional or Boneless Wings, smothered in a choice of nine sauces with names like Wimpy, Tongue Torch, Nuclear and Insane.

Customers at the Union Zaxby’s can enjoy The Coca-Cola Company’s proprietary drink fountain, Coca-Cola Freestyle.® The fountain is touch screen operated, enabling customers to select from more than 100 regular and low-calorie brands — including many varieties of waters, sports drinks, lemonades and sparkling beverages that, prior to the arrival of Coca-Cola Freestyle®, were not available in the U.S.

The menu also offers Zappetizers like Tater Chips, Spicy Fried Mushrooms and Fried White Cheddar Bites, as well as a variety of Party Platterz perfect for any family gathering or special occasion.

Zaxby’s also offers four salads, or Zalads: The House, The Blue, The Caesar and its newest addition The Cobb. All of Zaxby’s Zalads offer more chicken, unique ingredients, such as French-fried onions, fresh veggies and juicy tomatoes, and are larger than most salads offered elsewhere. Each is prepared with chicken, three kinds of lettuce and a variety of toppings. Zalads are assembled at the time the order is placed, versus being pre-made and stored in a cooler.

Additionally, Zaxby’s offers a new line of premium milkshakes, including the popular Birthday Cake and Banana Pudding Milkshakes and the new Chocolate Cookie Milkshake. They are rich and creamy, hand-blended, and are topped with whipped cream.
