UNION – Union County Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at the University of South Carolina-Union, 309 E. Academy St., as a part of a major statewide initiative designed to provide the tools and resources needed for challenged South Carolina communities to grow economically.
This event will be the seventh community day The Original Six Foundation has organized.
“Union County has so much potential and raising awareness with events such as Union County Day will encourage family projects, school and church projects and civic group projects from all areas of the state that will lift up our neighbors in Union County and beyond,” Gov. Nikki Haley said in making the announcement. “I am encouraged by the level of interest we have had from individuals, businesses, organizations, churches and groups who want to show Union County that neighbors helping neighbors will make South Carolina an even better place to live.”
In partnership with hundreds of community volunteers, the foundation will provide a variety of components and resources that were determined in collaboration with local leaders in Union County.
Activities include a Health Fair, which will provide plenty of family fun while highlighting the importance of personal health maintenance.
The Health Fair will offer free medical, dental, eye, chiropractic and diabetic screenings as well as information about health programs and Medicaid eligibility. The first 200 school-age children (18 years and younger) to complete a minimum of four health screenings are eligible for a backpack of their choice.
In addition, DHEC will be offering free TDAP vaccinations, and these vaccinations are required for all students entering seventh grade.
Additional activities will include a job fair that will provide attendees the opportunity to work on their resume and link them with onsite employers. Information about continuing education programs and a baby shower for expectant mothers will also be available. Lunch during the event will be free for all.
Founded by Gov. Haley, The Original Six Foundation unites private support to solve public challenges and does not use any government funding. The foundation’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for change in South Carolina by uniting public, private and civic leaders and resources to identify and address the challenging issues facing the state’s communities with the purpose of leaving the communities feeling empowered and positively impacted.
