UNION — A new local restaurant has proven successful after three weeks in business.
Tokyo Hibachi & Hot Wings has been open for three weeks, and owners Lai Fu and Shun T. Yang said they love the City of Union and their customers.
The Yangs have nearly 25 years experience in the restaurant business. Lai Fu said he came to the U.S. from South Korea in 1988 after the summer Olympics in Seoul. At the time, he worked as head chef for five-star hotels.
“I cooked all types of foods — Korean, American, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican,” Lai Fu said.
He said he opened his first restaurant in Atlanta in 1992, and he had a restaurant station during the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta. Lai Fu also said he enjoys teaching other chefs, and he taught in Beijing during the 2008 Olympics. The Yangs also owned a restaurant in Greenville before opening their newest one in Union.
Lai Fu said his secret is in his sauces.
“My hibachi sauce is different,” he said. “I use lots of fruit — orange and apple — and ginger, Teriyaki and cooking wine. I guarantee this restaurant is different from the rest.”
Lai Fu also said he takes pride in the freshness of the food he and Shun T. serve at the restaurant, and they specialize in sushi, hibachi, fresh fried calamari and hot wings.
“Everything is very fresh,” Lai Fu said.
Shun T. said she and her husband have been pleased with the response they have received in Union, and all of the customers have seemed to enjoy the food.
“We have a very healthy menu, also,” she added.
