JONESVILLE — A local case involving a dog attack is still under investigation.

According to an incident report, officers from the Union County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an address on West Springs Highway, Jonesville, to assist EMS after a dog attack. While en route, officers were advised that a dog had killed another dog, attacked a person, and was still at large, being aggressive toward EMS personnel and other residents of the mobile home park.

The report states that upon arrival, officers located EMS and the victim, who stated that she was walking her dog — a black and white chihuahua — on a leash in her yard when the neighbor’s dog attacked her and her dog. Residents pointed out a brown dog which appeared to the officer to be a boxer a pit bull mix. When the officer saw the dog, it had a small black and white dog in its mouth which appeared to be deceased. The victim was transported to Wallace Thomson Hospital for her injuries.

Animal Control came to the scene, tranquilized the dog, took possession of the dog, and the officer was unable to locate the chihuahua after the pit bull had been secured. The officer was also unable to locate any food or water for the dog which attacked.

The officer spoke with the owner of the dog by phone, advised him of the incident, and that animal control was taking possession of his dog due to the attack.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Union County Sheriff’s Office reported that the owner of the dog was on vacation and will be charged when he returns. The victim is at home resting but is facing more surgery in the days ahead. The dog was being cared for by a family member while the owners were on vacation. The owner will be charged with allowing a dog to run at large.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office stated the case is still under investigation, and more charges may be filed.
