UNION COUNTY — For the eighth election in a row the voters of SC House District 42 have chosen Mike Anthony to represent them in Columbia.
SC House District 42 is composed of Union County and part of Laurens County, but both candidates running for the seat this year are from Union County.
Anthony, a Democrat, was being challenged in his bid for an eighth term in office by Tommy Mann, a Republican who was making his first bid for public office.
Voters in District 42 gave the nod to Anthony in his bid for reelection, giving him 8,094 votes or 54.52 percent to 6,742 or 45.41 percent for Mann.
In Union County, Anthony received 6,925 votes or 58.58 percent and carried 16 precincts while Mann received 4,889 votes or 41.36 percent and carries seven precincts.
In the Laurens County portion of District 42, however, Mann received 1,853 votes or 61.26 percent while Anthony received 1,169 votes or 38.64 percent.
Anthony thanked the people of District 42 for reelecting him, pointing out that it was a great honor made even greater given the fact that he was chosen over such a high-quality candidate as Mann.
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve again,” Anthony said. “When you run against a quality opponent like Tommy it really is an honor. Our race wasn’t dirty, we ran on the issues.”
Anthony said he was humbled to be able to continue serving the people of District 42.
“For the people of District 42 to reelect me again is very humbling,” Anthony said. “I look forward to continuing to serve the people.”
