UNION COUNTY — A Whitmire man was arrested this week for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender.

William McKinley Chick Jr., 50, 112 Candice Circle, Whitmire, is charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with failure to register as a sex offender other than first offense.

The incident report states that Chick has been a registered sex offender with the Sheriff’s Office since April 5, 2010. The report states Chick did not come in to register as required by law on or by July 31 of this year. It states Chick’s mother called the Sheriff’s Office and said her son had been arrested in Newberry County on June 13 for driving under suspension and was in the Newberry Jail for that violation.

The report states this was checked and confirmed as accurate and Chick’s mother was advised her son was required to report and register with the Sheriff’s Office as soon as he was released from jail in Newberry County. It states Chick was required to register within one day of his release.

The report states a record check indicated Chick was released from the Newberry County Jail on Saturday, Aug. 5 but had failed to register with the Sheriff’s Office as of Thursday, Aug. 10.

The report states that a records check on Chick found that he had a prior offense for failing to register as a sex offender with the Sheriff’s Office and so the charge against him would be other than first offense. It states the deputy handling the case would contact the Union County Magistrate’s Office to sign a warrant to charge Chick accordingly.

Chick was taken into custody on Tuesday (Aug. 22).
