WHITMIRE — A man was killed this afternoon when what is believed to be a tornado flipped over the trailer he was living in.
In a telephone interview with The Union Times shortly before 5 p.m., Union County Sheriff David Taylor said that Jason C. Matthews, 66, a resident of Eaves Road in the Whitmire of Union County had died from injuries he received when his trailer was flipped over on him.
Taylor said that Matthews was inside the trailer when the storm, believed to be a tornado, hit, and was trapped under the debris caused by the storm. He said that Matthews was still alive when his brother reached him, but died soon afterward before first responders could arrive.
While an exact cause of Matthews’ death has not been officially determined, Taylor said it was likely the result of the injuries he suffered when the trailer was turned over on him.
Taylor said there was other damage in the Eaves Road area, but that no one else appeared to have been injured. He said the damage included trees that had been toppled and houses and barns that were damaged by the high winds.
First responders including Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, EMS paramedics, and the Union County Coroner’s Office were still on the scene as of 5 p.m.
