UNION — The Fourth of July came early for the residents of Oakmont of Union who were treated to a “Red, White, and Blue Celebration” by the staff of the nursing home/residential care center.

Residents, their families and friends, members of the center’s staff, and the general public gathered on the front lawn and in the center’s front parking lot for music, dancing, food, and fun. Virginia Babb, supervisor and admissions coordinator for assisted living, said the celebration is an annual event sponsor by the center to enable residents to enjoy Fourth of July fun without having to deal with the heat that always accompanies the holiday.

“This is our sixth year holding the Red, White, and Blue Celebration,” Babb said. “During the Fourth of July there are a lot of lot of different activities in the community but our residents are unable to attend them. We thought it would be good to bring it to them.

“We hold it in June because of the heat in July,” she said. “Our residents can’t be out in the heat.”

The center provides free drinks, hot dogs, potato chips, and cotton candy which Babb said were not only enjoyed by the residents but by their families and other guests who take part in the event.

“We just invite the families and the community in for a fun time,” Babb said. “It’s a nice time and it’s not too hot.”

Friday’s celebration also included musical performances by the Highway 49 band and Voices of Trust gospel group.
