Wins one, loses two against Paladins

UNION COUNTY — The 2017 baseball season got off to a mixed start for the USC Union Bantams who won one game but lost two others to the Furman Paladins this past weekend.

This weekend marked the start of the 2017 season for the Bantams which began by facing off against the Paladins in three games at the Timken Sports Complex.

On Saturday, the teams played a double-header with the Bantams winning the first game 2-1. The Paladins came back, however, to win the second game 9-3.

Sunday’s game was closer, but the Bantam again fell to the Paladins, this time by a score of 8-6.

Bantams Coach Jap Worthy said Monday that for the first game of Saturday’s double-header, Bantam Christian Joplin was the winning pitcher and Bantam Andrew Caskey had the save.

Worthy said that the hitters in Saturday’s game were Bantam Dalton Johnson, Bantam Kennedy Beaty, and Caskey.

For the second game of Saturday’s double-header, Worthy said the hitters were Beaty who was 2 for 3, Caskey who was 1 for 4, and Bantam Danny Glenn who was 1 for 3.

In Sunday’s game, Worthy said the hitters were Beaty who was 1 for 4, Caskey who was 1 for 4, Joplin who was 2 for 4, and Bantam JT Cheek who was 1 for 3.

Worthy said that this weekend the Bantams will face off against the Wofford Terriers at the Timken Sports Complex. He said the game will be Friday at 5 p.m.
