UNION — The combination of a love of decorating and the inspiring example of her mother lead Temika Savage to open her own business in downtown Union.
“M.E. Smith Design” is located at 213 South Gadberry Street and its front windows are decorated with hearts that not only serve as a reminder of Valentine’s Day but also that the business is a labor of love by owner Temika Savage.
“It’s an up-cycle furniture shop,” Savage said in describing her business Tuesday afternoon. “I take pieces of furniture and stain, paint, upholster, or add to. I take all types of furniture.”
As she prepares for her formal opening which will be Saturday at 10 a.m., Savage was hard at work in her shop, painting a table and working on other pieces of furniture. As you look around the store you see dinner tables and matching chairs, other tables and other chairs, as well other furniture and decorative items that Savage has already worked on or is working on.
Something else that catches your eye is a black and white photo of a woman that hangs on the wall behind Savage’s corner work space. The picture is of Savage’s mother whose example she said helped encourage her to start her business.
“I call my shop ‘M.E. Smith Design,’ that stands for my mother, Mary Elizabeth, whose maiden name was Smith,” Savage said. “She was a very hard worker. She is my inspiration.”
In addition to the example her mother set for her as a hard worker, Savage said she also wanted to open her own business because “I love decorating.”
The combination of her mother’s example and her love of decorating lead Savage to quit her job in 2016 and open her business. Savage has been at 213 South Gadberry Street since September, getting the building ready and preparing for her formal opening which will be this Saturday. She said that her store will have its formal opening at 10 a.m. when her pastor blesses it.
M.E. Smith Design is open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information about the store and the services it provides call 864-441-0515.
