BUFFALO — Buffalo Elementary School had a lot of fun this Christmas combining a school first involving students and their parent with a very tacky contest.

The school held its first Family Writing Day, a event for students and their families that the school hopes will become a part part of its annual Christmas celebration.

As part of Family Writing Day, parents were invited to visit the school help their children write letters to Santa. Each grade level was not only given the opportunity to write letters to Santa Claus, but to also decorate Christmas cookies and hear “The Polar Express” read aloud.

While letters to Santa are normally mailed to him, that was not the case BES where Santa actually visited the students, providing them with the opportunity to personally give him their letters.

A press release issued by BES states that “the Christmas spirit was everywhere at school this day, between the Christmas trees down the hall, the Christmas music playing and the Christmas sweaters everywhere!”

One the staples of Christmas is what is known as the “tacky’ Christmas sweater or other article of clothing that conveys the Christmas spirit, albeit with very tacky taste. Tacky Christmas gear was very much in view at BES where the staff welcomed parents while wearing their tackiest Christmas clothes.

The tacky clothes just weren’t for greeting purposes, however, as the school staff competed to see who wore the tackiest Christmas clothes. The teacher who wore the tackiest sweater received a trophy. The winners of the contest were Laura Henderson, Carlin Friedholm, and Courtney Franklin.
