MONARCH — Some students at Monarch Elementary School turned some “silly sentences” they wrote into some “silly stories” which have now been published in a book.

“Silly Stories from 2nd Grade” are a collection of short stories written by the students in Candi Osborne’s second grade class at Monarch Elementary School. The books and the stories that compose it grew out of an especially popular part of the students’ day.

“What we do in the afternoon in our literacy bloc is they have different rotations and the most popular one is “Silly Sentences,” Osborne said.

Osborne said the students enjoyed writing silly sentences so much that she decided to have them each write a story based on a silly sentence they wrote and have the results compiled and published as a book.

“I found online where you can have one book published for free for your classroom and your students have the chance to order them at reduced cost,” Osborne said. “So everybody created their own silly sentence and created a story from that silly sentence.”

In addition to coming up with their silly sentences and then expanding them into a total of 22 silly stories, Osborne said the students also illustrated their stories and those illustrations are included in the book.

The young authors were honored Wednesday with a book signing at the Monarch Elementary School Library. School and school district officials attended the event during which refreshments were served and those in attendance had the opportunity to meet with, talk, and congratulate the young authors and, of course, read and enjoy all those silly stories.
