UNION COUNTY — Some very talented student-athletes were recognized this week by the Union County School District for their achievements on the field.

During Monday’s meeting of the Union County Board of School Trustees, 20 student-athletes were presented with certificates of recognition by Union County School District Superintendent Dr. William Roach. The certificates recognized the young men and women for the honors they have received this year in the respective sports.

Roach said Friday that the certificates are part of an effort by the district to recognize and encourage student achievement.

“The reason I wanted to implement the recognition of students in the board meeting is I think it is important to let our students know that the administration and the board are proud of them for their accomplishments,” Roach said. “Those accomplishments could be a variety of things from the arts, academics, and extra-curricular events (such as athletics). I wanted to recognize these student-athletes because not only did they win an award for their athletic accomplishments, but they represented Union County Schools well and made us proud of those accomplishments.

“Students that are involved in extra-curricular activities not only carry a full academic load, but also devote time to that activity also,” he said. “I firmly believe that when students find something to invest their time in that helps them be more connected with the school and the community as a whole. It teaches teamwork, perseverance, time-management, and that Hard Work Pays Off!”

Roach added that his plans are to highlight students and their accomplishments at each board meeting.
